world youth days

WYD 2023

World Youth Day (WYD) is a gathering of young people from around the world with the Pope. It is also a pilgrimage, a celebration of youth, an expression of the universal Church and an intense moment of evangelization for young people all over the world. With a clear Catholic identity, WYD opens its doors to everyone, regardless of their degree of closeness to the Church.

What is  le JMJ?

WYD brings together millions of young people to celebrate their faith and their membership in the Church. Since their first edition in Rome in 1984, the World Youth Days have revealed themselves as a laboratory of faith, a place where vocations are born and an instrument for the evangelization and transformation of the Church. Their goal is to provide all participants with an experience of the universal Church and to encourage each and every one to a personal encounter with Jesus Christ. They are a stimulus for the faith, hope and charity of the whole welcoming country. Thanks to young people who are active participants, WYD also wants to promote peace, unity and brotherhood among peoples and nations around the world.

Throughout the week, young people from all over the world will be welcomed, especially in collective spaces (schools, sports halls, etc.), in parishes and families. In addition to moments of prayer, sharing and free time, the young people who live this   celebration will participate in many initiatives organized by the WYD team, in different places in the host city. Their highlights are the celebrations in which the Pope is present (key events), such as the opening and closing ceremonies, the Stations of the Cross, the vigil and, on the last day, the final mass.

Theme

"Mary set out quickly" (Lk 1:39)

Mary of Nazareth is the great figure of travel in Christianity. Mary teaches us to say yes to God. Marie is the emblematic figure of this edition of WYD and will be with us in Lisbon.

In the biblical episode of the Visitation, Mary is standing and in action, Mary is both a witness to divine and missionary love.

Getting started quickly is the attitude that Pope Francis proposes to us for the WYD in Lisbon in 2023: “Let the evangelization of young people be active and missionary, because that is how they will be able to recognize Christ present and alive, then bear witness to him”.

Addressing young people in particular, the Pope challenges them to be courageous missionaries, as the Pope wrote in his Apostolic Exhortation Christus Vivit: “Where does Jesus send us? There are no borders, there are no limits: he sends us all. The gospel is for all and not for the few. (CV 177).
